Kayenta Chapter

Summer 2012 SCHOLARSHIP
OPENS: June 30,2012 @ 8:00am
CLOSES: July 31,2012 @ 5:00pm

The community of Kayenta is scenically located. It is just north of junctions US Hwy 160 and US Hwy 163. It is the gateway to Monument Vally and is enroute to Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, Canyon DeChelly and Mesa Verde. These tourist attractions make Kayenta a hub to scenic wonderlands most visited by tourists.
Kayenta was first settle by a group of Quaker families in 1909. It was important to establish this settlement because a cross road was needed to serve as a commerce center to enable travel across the isolated northern parts of the Navajo reservation.

The geological region features a high, dissected, southward sloping plateau that extends from the southwestern portion of the Kayenta area to the southeast for many miles. To the northwest and northeast are the sedimentary sandstone formations. Also included in this region are the sporadic volcanic formations known as El Capitan, Black Rock, and Church Rock.
